– Digital4Good hosted its annual summit dedicated to their mission of creating safer online spaces. One in three young people in 30 countries said that they had been a victim of online bullying, with one in five reporting skipping school due to cyberbullying and violence.
“We aim to uplift young changemakers using digital technology and media to not only build community but to also address social, environmental, and educational challenges. The other big piece they are getting is that community. That community of positive change makers that they can be around and are all going to support each other and help each other,” said Kim Karr, co-founder of Digital4Good. Through Digital4Good, changemakers are able to access connections within the industry as well as showcasing their projects. This year’s summit focused on AI, impact and policy change, as policy has become a prevalent topic in the discussion of creating safer digital spaces. This year saw the passing of legislation to ban children under 16 in Australia from accessing social media. Support from prominent celebrities, public figures and leaders in media came together to speak on a panel at Google as well. Hit recording artist known globally for her mental health advocacy, Meredith O’Connor, was joined by her colleague Jennifer Frommer (SVP of Branding at Columbia Records). This panel explored the implications of how making a positive social impact in the media can contribute to commercial success and shifts in pop culture. Joining the panel included Rehan Station, a New York based attorney who went viral for his success at Harvard
Law School and Zoe Darmé, a Director at Google.
