Do Now! Internet Research
Find a definition of Human Computer Interface
Open your workbook (Google Slides Presentation) and write down 3 things about HCI

Further Research : What is a CLI and what is a GUI?
Learning Objectives / Knowledge Intention
Know what Human Computer Interaction is including:
- know what the term means and how it came about
- know more about how study for it as a career
Learning Outcomes / Knowledge Gained
- Open a Google Slides presentation
- Answer questions about HCI
- Improve the presentation by adding pictures, changing themes, etc
- Show your own vision of how future technology will look
Before we had Windows : Command Line Interface (CLI)
What is the point of this CLI?
What would an advantage of a computer interface like this be?
Can you think of any disadvantages?
Next……..
The first GUI (Graphical User Interface)
This is a graphical user interface, we’ve gone from typing commands in, to clicking on icons, this was a big leap forward
……..and then…..
Windows 95
Really starting to think about a user interface now
Good user interfaces should;
- be attractive and pleasing to the eye
- allow the user to try out different options easily
- be easy to use
- use suitable colours for key areas
- use words that are easy to understand aimed at the type of user
- have help documentation
It should also consider the needs of the users. For example, young children are likely to prefer pictures to words and people with disabilities may benefit from particular input or output devices
Which do people prefer and why?
The GUI is more user friendly and intuitive, this is where HCI comes in, a whole science has been built up around building user interfaces, and it’s called Human Computer Interaction or HCI
Can you think of a disadvantage of GUI?
Much more processing power and memory is needed in the device, and more expensive to make and buy
Some questions
- Write down (in your own words) three things you found out about Human Computer Interaction.
- State an advantage of the Command Line Interface
- What is a GUI?

Following the principles of HCI should mean
You end up with a well designed computer interface, (tablet, PC, laptop, smart phone) which;
- is attractive and pleasing to the eye
- allows the user to try out different options easily
- be easy to use
- use suitable colours for key areas
- use words that are easy to understand aimed at the type of user
- have help documentation
- It should also consider the needs of the users. For example, young children are likely to prefer pictures to words and people with disabilities may benefit from particular input or output devices.
What does the future hold for for HCI?
Do some research, what is the future of how humans interact with computers?
I.e. will they still be hand held devices in the future? What will happen to desktop computers?
Practical Task
Continue with the Google Slides presentation (template example of all slides shown below)
You will eventually be asked to create your own vision of the future. Have fun and use your imagination.
